Christians across the Asia-Pacific region celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ on Wednesday, nervous from past attacks and an uncertain future. In Muslim majority countries such as Indonesia, Pakistan and Bangladesh, security forces provided special protection for churches. Two years ago, bombs on Christmas Eve rocked dozens of churches in several Indonesian cities, killing 19 people.
The group blamed for those attacks was Jemaah Islamiah, also charged with the October 12 bomb attack on the holiday island of Bali in which more than 190 people died. A joint statement issued by the Alliance of Churches in Indonesia and the Indonesian Bishops' Council, read out on Christmas Eve at churches across the country, voiced hopes for an end to the violence and the problems that have troubled the nation in recent years.
"We are entering Christmas 2002 with a feeling of hurt but also hope for recovery," it said. This year, 300,000 police and soldiers were deployed to guard the city and its celebrations over the Christmas period. "I do not mind the tight security at all. It is the price we have to pay for being able to worship in peace and security," said Suryani, a law-firm employee who attended mass at Jakarta's cathedral with her family. Police in Islamabad said they had foiled an attack on a church when they found a bag of grenades and ammunition near St Thomas' church in the Pakistani capital.
In a church near the Indian city of Calcutta, seven people were injured when around 20 armed robbers threw bombs during a midnight service and made off with money and valuables. Christians in India make up around two per cent of the population.

Hacker Indonesia Bobol Puluhan Situs Internet Inggris
“Just Wanna Bring Peace for All People in the World.. Exactly In INDONESIA.. We All family.. Please Don't KiLL the others With your Power We All Hate Civil and Political War.. That's Can Destroy Our Lovely Country..
Legislation providing $900m for IT security research and education to protect against hackers and terrorists has been signed by President Bush.
Under the Cyber Security Research and Development Act, computer security research centres and educational fellowships will be set up at the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
NIST will develop a security plan for federal agencies highlighting security settings and options that are available on all federally procured hardware and software.
According to Associated Press, the legislation was backed by Republicans and Democrats who said that the funding was needed to defend against terrorists who may target vital communications networks.
Several agencies will now become part of the newly created Department of Homeland Security, including the National Infrastructure Protection Center and the Critical Infrastructure Assurance Office.
