Sorong Regency is situated in the northern part of Papua. It is in 43,127 km width,
stretches lengthwise between 130° east longitude and 02' south latitude. Its position is very
strategic where the merchantmen or the passenger ships are able to stop there. Sorong regency
borders in the North on Pacific Ocean, in the south on Fak Fak Regency, in the east on Manokwari
Regency and in the west on the Molluccas Province.
Sorong Regency consists of 15 districts, 7 sub districts and 108 villages with the
population of 180.000 people.
Sorong is known as an industrial and the second largest city in Irian Jaya, where
Indonesian and foreign oil companies mine. Situated on the bird's head of the main island of Irian
Jaya, there are probably not many people known that it owns over 600 islands.
Waigeo, Salawati, Batanta, and Misool are four big islands that are also
administrated by the district. Beside industries and oil mining, Sorong and neighborhood islands,
according to the head of the district, actually offer more than what any other islands in Irian Jaya
may provide to tourists for diving. The main attractions are pearl farming, under Japanese
instructor, at Kabra island, Misool and Waigeo islands with their communities of various birds.
Right in the town is Japanese War Memorial on Jalan Arfak. So far, it has not always
been easy to get to nearby islands. There are at least three flights a week from Jayapura and Biak
to Sorong, while flights from Denpasar, Jakarta, and Ujungpandang are also available. However,
surrounding islands must be reached by motorized boats.
Cape of Cassuwary
It is a beautiful long and clean beach where there are kept plenty of exoctic
corals. It is also suitable for diving lovers. The distance from Sorong town is 3 km and can be
reached by vehicles.
Crocodile Island
An island with slightly sloping beach, soft sand and pure water is very suitable for
swimming and fishing. It is located 0.5 km across Sorong town and accessible by speed boat.
Kafiau Island
An island located in the middle of Dampir Waigeo Straits is very rich of sea biotic.
Apart from its scenic nature, it has also an interesting and enchanting sea bottom that is very
suitable for diving lovers. It is about 1.5 hours to reach by motor boat from Sorong town.
Matan Island
An island with various kinds of trees, soft sands and pure water is a place for
bathing and fishing. It is accessible approximately 20 minutes from Sorong town by speed boat.
Klaijili Hot Spring
Here is a hot spring found in Makbon District that is used to cure skin diseases. It
is situated 60 km from Sorong town and reachable by vehicles.
Peace and Friendship Monument
Here, was built a monument to commemorate the Japanese Occupation in Sorong which
reflected peace and friendship. It lies downtown on the top of Arfak and easily reachable by car.
